The district of Pabna had a leading role during the War of Liberation in 1971. On 23 March, the indomitable sons of Pabna town hoisted the flag of free Bangladesh at the premises of Town Hall at the heart of the town. On 28 March, they over-powered the Pakistani soldiers in the gun-battle at the premises of the old telephone exchange building. It is a matter of regret that many incidents of such heroic resistance have remained out of public sight as the chronological history of the War of Liberation at Pabna has not yet been written. In the \"Pabna in the War of Liberation\", the writer Zahurul Islam Bishu, a freedom fighter, tried to bring some of the stories to light.
